Early Snowstorm Hits Midwest and Central Rockies...


Blizzard conditions occurred today across Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas with up to 3 feet of snow and higher drifts across parts of northern Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Roads were impassable tonight due to blowing snow. This was the heaviest October snow in the Denver area in more than a decade, cancelling flights as the airport in Denver received 16 inches of snow. The surface map above indicates that the storm is located over eastern Nebraska dumping heavy snow across the upper Midwest.

Strong Winds, Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain for NY Tri-State Area...

A strong area of low pressure over New England will drag a cold through our region tonight. Radar shows a huge area of heavy rain and thunderstorms across New Jersey and eastern PA. This will possibly cancel tonight's Yankee game at Yankee Stadium. The front will also produce wind gusts as high as 40 mph through early Sunday morning. The air behind the front is not very cold and it will be in the low 60s on Sunday and rather mild for the upcoming work week.

Early Season Nor'easter Winding Down...


The second of two coastal storms is moving away from the NYC metropolitan area. At 5:30 pm on Sunday, October 18, 2009 Doppler radar continues to show a large area of precipitation with heavy snow across interior Massachusetts, extreme northeast Connecticut and southern New Hampshire. Most of the rain has ended in the New York City area with rain continuing to fall across parts of Long Island. It was a weekend to remember in the Northeast as a very cold and unusual early season blast of cold air came down from Canada keeping temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal from Thursday October 14th through Sunday October 18th. People walking the streets were dressed for winter in NYC with gloves, hats and scarves. Winds gusted to more than 40 mph at times. The New England Patriot - Tennessee Titans came was played in snow for most of the game as it accumulated on the field. A rare October snow game for the NFL.
The first storm affected the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tri-State NY metropolitan area Thursday night into Friday and then another storm moved south and east of the NYC metro area Saturday night and Sunday.
The temperature in Central Park on October 18, 2009 ranged from a high of only 45 to a low of 42. The normal high is 62 and the normal low is 48. Coastal flooding occurred in parts of Nassau County Long Island that resulted in street flooding.

First Snowfall of Fall Season in Tri-State Area...

The season's first snowfall in parts of the Tri-State New York area came early this year. Last year in October 2008, a storm produced heavy snow in northern New Jersey upstate New York and interior Connecticut a few days before Halloween. Another coastal storm is expected to follow the same track producing more wet snow across the interior Saturday night and early Sunday. Once again wind gusts are expected to reach more than 40 mph. Snowfall reports for October 15, 2009 from the National Weather Service:

Green Pond: 1.0 inch
Marcell: 1.0 inch

Sussex County, NJ:
Sparta: 1.0 inch
High Point State Park: 0.5 inch

Warren County:

Lake Harmony: 3.0 inches

Monroe County, PA:
Tobyhanna: 4.3 inches

Early Nor'easter Will Bring Strong Winds, Rain and Snow to Interior Sections!


An early fall nor'easter will produce strong gusty winds and heavy rain through Friday. Occasional rain and very cool temperatures will be present in the Northeast through the weekend. The map below indicates the latest NAM computer model forecast for Friday evening at 8 PM EDT. Snow will mix in with the rain as you move to the northern and west suburbs of New Jersey and Upstate New York. As much as 1 to 4 inches of snow can be expected in the higher elevations of Sussex County, New Jersey, the Poconos of Pennsylvania and Orange and Sullivan Counties of New York. The rain will persist as another slow moving area of low pressure moves across Delaware on Saturday and Sunday. Stay dry!

First Coastal Storm of Fall is on the Way...Strong Winds and Rain


Low pressure is forecast to move across the Ohio Valley and then re-develop into a strong low off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Coastal sections of the Northeast including NYC and Long Island metro area will also experience coastal flooding at high tide. Strong, steady northeast to east winds will blow at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 and 50 mph. Temperatures will be cool with highs only in the 50s. There may be some wet snow mixing in on Thursday night and early Friday across Orange and Putnam Counties of New York and the Poconos of northeastern Pennsylvania. Milder weather with partial sunshine will return early next week! The weather map above is the forecast surface map from NOAA for 8 pm on Thursday, October 15, 2009.

Snow Cancels Baseball Playoff Game in Denver on October 10, 2009!


Record cold and snow cancelled Saturday's playoff baseball game in Denver, CO. The high on Saturday was only 26 degrees and the low was 17 which set a record for the date. Sunday's Rockies-Angels game was played with temperatures in the upper 20s and lows 30s! This weather map indicates the cold front and snow that fell in Denver and other parts of the Rockies on this day. A trace of snow fell on October 9th and October 10th and the wind gusted to 38 mph on the 9th.

Coldest Air of the Season to Arrive This Weekend in the Northeast...


A large Canadian air mass will plunge down this weekend here in the Northeast. Frost and freeze warnings are in effect across interior sections of New York State and Connecticut. Temperatures will fall into the 30s and 40s by Sunday morning and again on Monday morning. Highs will be in the 50s to near 60 on Sunday and only in the 50s on Columbus Day.

A strong area of low pressure produced wind gusts that were measured as high as 56 mph at JFK Airport. Other wind reports included:
