Very Strong Coastal Storm Produces Wind Gusts to Near 80 mph in Long Island, Downed Trees, Thousands Without Power...

A strong coastal storm produced heavy rain, flooding, damaging winds and heavy wet snow north and west of the city on Friday, March 2, 2018. The rain began in the city Thursday evening. The rain mixed with and changed to wet snow during the day on Friday.  The storm moved away Friday evening but strong winds continued.  It was also windy today with gusts to 40 mph. The wind gusted to 78 mph in Bayville, LI, 69 mph in Eatons Neck, LI, 66 mph at JFK Airport, 53 mph at Newark and 43 mph in Central Park. A total of 14.0 inches of snow was reported by the NWS in Monroe, NY, 8.3 inches in West Milford, NJ and 7.0 inches in New Fairfield, CT. Another storm is forecast to produce heavy wet snow later this week on Wednesday or Thursday.
