Upper Midwest Snowstorm this Weekend...
An intense storm tracking across the upper Midwest has produced up to 18 inches of snow in Sacred Heart, MN with 11 inches so far in St. Paul. Blizzard and Winter Storm Warnings are posted tonight for parts of South Dakota and Minnesota. The storm will move quickly into the St. Lawrence River Valley on Monday. Areas that have not see much snow during the past year recieved snow with this storm.
The GFS model continues to indicate storms developing from disturbances moving in from the Pacific. The storms have been tracking northeastward from the southern Plains into the Great Lakes or move across the northern Plains into eastern Canada. The weather has been mild in the Northeast the last few days after a cool start to December 2012. The storm track will continue next week with more snow for the Midwest and the Great Lakes. There are some signs that after next week, the trend will be colder with a lot of cold air moving down from the Arctic with a progressive flow, active flow. The GFS is hinting at the potential for rain and/or snow for the Northeast and the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley on or about December 16-17, 2012; December 20-21, 2012 and again on or about Christmas Day. Of course, this forecast will likely change dramatically especially after the next 5 to 7 days but the GFS so far has been outstanding once again in forecasting trends. The snow cover across the nation is below normal with only about 20% of the nation with snow on the ground. The Northeast is almost completely void of snow.
