Hurricane Milton Now Over Central Florida, Gusts Over 100 mph, Flooding...

Hurricane Milton made landfall this evening near Siesta Key, Florida.  The highest surge will be south of Sarasota to Bonita Beach. Life threatening storm surge, severe winds and flooding rain along with tornadoes can be expected overnight. Milton now located 75 miles southwest of Orlando, 105 mph, moving ENE at 16 mph, pressure 28.35 inches. The storm will track across Florida Thursday morning. Stay safe.

Catastrophic Flooding and Wind Damage from Category 4 Hurricane Helene Tonight in Northwest Florida

One of the strongest hurricanes to make landfall in Florida will produce widespread catastrophic damage and flooding tonight and Friday. Hurricane Helene at 7 PM Thursday has intensified to a Category 4 storm that is now about 130 miles west of Tampa.  The storm is moving quickly to the north-northwest at 23 mph. The storm will make landfall tonight near Cross City, Florida.  Up to 20 ft. of storm surge is forecast which will produce extreme damage. Heavy, flooding rains and tornadoes will also occur.  The storm is forecast to produce heavy rain inland over Georgia into the southern Appalachians tomorrow. A few showers make work their way into the NYC metro area this weekend. All the best to the residents of Florida in the path of this historic, dangerous storm.

Debby Came Ashore Earlier Today with 50 mph Winds in South Carolina, Heavy Rains will Produce Flooding Today, 1 to 2 Inches for NYC

Hurricane Debby came ashore along the west coast of Florida on Monday, the storm weakened and tracked across northeast Florida out in the ocean and came ashore again ass a tropical storm along the South Carolina coast this morning.  As much as 20 inches of rain is forecast along the coast of South Carolina that will lead to catastrophic flooding. Tornado watches, Flood watches and warnings are in effect. The storm will track into Pennsylvania and western New York State on Friday.  One to 2 inches of rain is forecast for New York City and surrounding suburbs. Sunshine back Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Tomorrow and Friday for the Northeast...

An intensifying storm will track over the Great Lakes into Ontario over the next few days.  Rain will fall in New York City Thursday and Friday with over an inch of rain forecast.  It will be breezy and chilly this weekend but warming up early next week.

4.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Northern New Jersey

The strongest earthquake since 1884 occurred near Lebanon, New Jersey at 10:23 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2024. The earthquake was 4.8 magnitude in strength. It was felt in Philadelphia, New York City, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Long Island and New Jersey.  A relatively strong aftershock of 3.8 magnitude occurred near Califon, New Jersey at 5:59 p.m. on April 5, 2024.  Last night and today there were several weaker aftershocks. An aftershock of 2.5 magnitude was registered near Gladstone, New Jersey at 2:46 a.m. today, April 6, 2024. More activity is possible along the Ramapo fault in the coming months.

Fast Moving Storm Produces a Wide Range in Snowfall This Morning, Staten Island 10", Central Park 2"

Low pressure early this morning tracked off the Delaware Coast spreading snow across the New York City metro area from approximately 2 a.m. through 10 a.m. Only 2.0 inches fell in Central Park with 10.0 inches in Staten Island at Tottenville.  Other totals included 8.0 inches in Coney Island, 6.6 inches in Oceanside and 3.7 inches in Newark.  Other amounts in New Jersey included 13.0 inches in Frenchtown, 11.3 inches in New Brunswick, 9.0 inches in Metuchen, 8.5 inches in Hopewell and 8.2 inches in Hopelawn.  A band of very heavy snow developed across eastern PA to southern Brooklyn around 5 a.m.  This produced the unusual heavy snow.  The NWS in Mount Holly reported that snowfall rates up to 4 inches per hour occurred in this band. Scattered snow showers and heavier snow squalls will occur today, sunny and seasonably cold tomorrow.  There is a chance for another storm next weekend.

Snow and Wind for New York City, Long Island and Coastal New England Tuesday...

A storm over the Southeast will track northeast and strengthen off the coast of New Jersey tonight and Tuesday.  The storm will produce rain, snow, sleet and wind gusts over 30 mph late tonight and during the day tomorrow.  The weather has been unseasonably mild the past week so the snow should melt on the roadways after first with slushy accumulations on the roads and sidewalks expected in the afternoon.  Temperatures should remain near or slightly above freezing during the day.  A hard freeze will occur at night as the skies clear.  It will be cold Wednesday and Thursday.  The city has switched all city schools to remote learning on Tuesday.  No other significant storms on the horizon but colder weather may return late this month and early March.
