Blizzard Warning for Long Island, Winter Storm Warning for the Rest of the Tri-State Area for Thursday Night and Friday...

A Blizzard Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Long Island and a Winter Storm Warning is in effect elsewhere in the New York metropolitan area for Thursday night and Friday morning. Low pressure will develop off the coast of North Carolina and track northeastward. Meanwhile, a cold front and moist air overunning the very cold Arctic air that is moving into the Northeast will generate scattered areas of light snow across the area tonight and during the day on Thursday. The steadier snow will arrive after 7 PM Thursday night and continue into Friday morning until about noon. A total of 6 to 12 inches of dry, powdery snow is forecast and the winds gusting to 50 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow. The coldest air since 2009 will move into New York with lows near 8 degrees by Friday morning and temperatures from 0 to 10 below in the suburbs. Tempertures tonight are forecast to be near -42 in International Falls, MN, -15 in Minneapolis and -32 in Caribou, ME. Moderating temperatures are expected on Sunday with a chance of rain.
